Background

I'm Welsh so rugby has always been a great interest, though I have never played the game apart from a couple of sessions in PE at school where I was the weed standing out on the wing hoping the ball, and particularly anybody carrying it, would stay well away from me!

My first involvement with a club was when my speedy son played minis from U8. I was always there supporting and eventually started reffing in his final year. Did the course, reffed some practice games and friendlies, ending the year with a Sussex semi-final and was given the final of the Worthing Mini Festival.

Having really enjoyed my reffing and reached a fair level of competence, son decided to give up his rugby and concentrate on athletics. I followed him, lost contact with club rugby apart from watching Worthing 1sts fairly regularly, and became an athletics coach and team manager.

Later I had an urge to ref again, but athletics commitments stopped me doing anything about it till early in 2005. I joined a few forums on the web (see links alongside), posed a few Qs, got concerned that wearing glasses might make me a non-starter, then contacted the Sussex Society and headed for the Foundation course after considerable swotting up on the laws!

Below is a log of my progress - mostly in the form of match reports. It has really helped me writing them - if they interest / benefit anyone else that's a bonus.
